Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, born in 1777, was the daughter of a textile manufacturer from Reims, Champagne. Widowed at just 27 years old, she took control of her own destiny and became one of the first modern entrepreneurs. In an era when women were excluded from the business world, she dared to lead the company founded by her father-in-law in 1772, a role she took on with great passion and determination.
Her creativity and thirst for innovation led to numerous breakthroughs in the world of champagne: the first known vintage champagne; the invention of the riddling rack; and the first known blended rosé champagne. These three innovations revolutionized champagne production and were widely adopted by producers, laying the foundation for modern champagne making.
Madame Clicquot transformed her name into a symbol of excellence that shines around the world. Her exceptional contributions earned her the title “La Grande Dame of Champagne.”
