Bodega Numanthia was founded in 1998 and is located in Valdefinjas, Castilla y León in the northwestern part of Spain. The winery is a living tribute to the ancient city of Numantia, whose inhabitants chose death over surrender during the Roman invasions.
In the 19th century, the phylloxera epidemic devastated most of the vineyards in Europe, but the vineyards of Bodega Numanthia were among the few that survived. They are also among the oldest vineyards in Europe, some over 140 years old.
The vines, growing in sandy and rocky soil, are a living symbol of resilience. They have withstood the test of time, despite the extremely dry climate, often compared to desert conditions. To reach the necessary water, the vines develop roots up to 5 meters deep. Preserving this unique heritage lies at the core of Bodega Numanthia’s philosophy.
The winery produces three expressions of a single variety, Tinta de Toro, a native and rare grape known as the “blackest black grape.” It is famed for its concentration, balanced tannins, and elegant notes. A member of the Tempranillo family, Tinta de Toro has successfully adapted to the terroir of Toro, yielding very low production, one of the lowest in the world (<2000 kg/ha), ensuring high concentration, expressive wines, and impressive quality.
Bodega Numanthia is truly a Spanish gem.
